Asphalt Rejuvenator is a recent addition to IWC Sealcoatings roster of services. We’ve had several opportunities to apply PRT Group’s “CPR Asphalt Rejuvenator '' product but none as large as the recent project for the City of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

We were contacted by the city’s Pavement Preservation Specialist about our abilities. The city was looking for a proven and tested product as an alternative to traditional asphalt surface treatments.

Frederick Pierce who managed the project explained that the Conditioning Pavement Rejuvenator, CPR™ addresses the core issue of why asphalt deteriorates: oxidation. Oxidation causes the binder that holds the aggregates together in the asphalt to become hard and brittle. In turn losing its effectiveness to protect the underlying asphalt.

The Conditioning Pavement Rejuvenator, CPR™ is a penetrant that replaces lost maltenes (the soft fraction of the asphalt binder) in the asphalt. Unlike a surface coating CPR™ Asphalt Rejuvenator penetrates to a depth of 3/8 to 1/2 an inch deep. It chemically plasticizes or rejuvenates the asphalt binder, thus keeping the aggregates bonded.

The Asphalt Rejuvenator restores the like-new qualities of viscosity, ductility, and bitumen content extending the service life of asphalt pavement much longer than other asphalt surface treatments.

The cost of the project is expected to be about one third of the cost of asphalt resurfacing and is only 50% more than other asphalt surface treatments
We expect the application to last between 3 to 5 years depending on traffic, which is twice as long as other asphalt surface treatments. And it extends the life of the existing asphalt pavement because of its rejuvenating properties.
The product is ready to drive on in just 24 hours unlike other products that take 2-3 days. Residents love that!

Scope of the Fayetteville NC Asphalt Rejuvenator Project

Application of the Asphalt Rejuvenator began in late June of 2021 and was completed by mid-September. IWCSealcoating’s bid was based on the application of 40,000 square yards of Asphalt Rejuvenator to eight streets.

Asphalt Rejuvnator application is weather sensitive. There were twenty seven days of rain during this period. The manufacturer of the Conditioning Pavement Rejuvenator, CPR™ requires the surface be dry for a minimum of 24 hours before application. The reality was we had approximately 10 to 12 days for proper application within the 60 day completion window. The city kindly extended our timeline due to the mitigating circumstances.

The project also included removal of existing sand, weeds and debris on the streets. It required we hang door tags notifying each resident of upcoming work and provide traffic control management.
